‘Flowers are a proud assertion that a ray of beauty out-values all the utilities of the world. – Ralph Waldo Emerson’
I’m pretty sure most of you have seen these famous LED flowers somewhere, be it on social media or Korean dramas. This place was flocked with young couples and lovers, and for a moment i felt like the odd one out since i was there alone.
Located in the vicinity of the Dongdaemun Design Plaza, this installation was actually a special temporary exhibit to mark the nation’s 70th year of independence but due to its popularity, has been made permanent. The lights come on just before sunset, and is really a beautiful spectacle. There is a barrier between the footpath and the flower field but i noticed a few bent pieces, most likely from people who are immune to keeping with the rules.
Funny story – i actually found this place by chance. I had every intention of paying it a visit and was taking the train from Seoul station but tbh didn’t realise that there are actually 2 different Dongdaemun stations. I got off at the Dongdaemun History & Culture Park station (which is the correct one), simply because it was the first station that i noticed. Talk about dumb luck hey haha. For some reason, i had it in my head that this installation was at a mall, so i looked at the exit maps and was about to head in the direction of the shopping district when i noticed the iconic metal structure outside another exit. I was excited with my discovery, having seen it countless of times on Instagram so imagine my surprise when i walked around the whole building and saw the LED flower field! Thank goodness i followed my instincts.
