Osaka Diary: Day 1 & 2

March 13, 2018

What We Did Day 1: Shinsaibashi, Dotonbori & Namba I flew to Osaka with ANA* (via Tokyo) and arrived to a beautiful sunrise at the airport. The tarmac crew were the cutest i’d ever seen – they’d stop whatever they were doing and just wave at the plane as it started to taxi on the runway. That really brightened up my day especially after an exhausting 11hr flight from Sydney. I had a different arrival time than the rest of…

Less Than 24 Hours In: Nara

March 6, 2018

What We Did We arrived Nara around noon and initially wandered around the couple of shops nearby, stocking up on Daiso’s heat packs before making our way towards Todai-ji Temple. It was crazy freezing on the day we were there, and when we stumbled across an old lady selling steaming hot sweet potatoes out of this portable wood-fired oven, we immediately started waiting in line (though we misunderstood the pricing and ended up paying 1,000yen for a sweet potato yikes). This…

Todai-ji

February 24, 2018

One of Nara’s iconic landmarks. The main hall of Todai-ji, Daibutsuden (otherwise known as the Big Buddha Hall), is a vast wooden structure, housing one of Japan’s largest bronze statues. Despite its overwhelming size, it is actually only two thirds of the original structure, having been rebuilt after being consumed by fire. Twice. There’s something different about Japanese temples and shrines, where the silence speaks volumes and any tourist chatter gets drowned out by your sense of awe. I have…

Oh Deer

February 21, 2018

Such beautiful creatures! Finally paid a visit to Nara Park, home to countless of wild deer, but despite being wild, there’s nothing wild about their habitat. There are easily thousands of tourists each day, and you can purchase a pack of deer biscuits for a mere 150yen. They are somehow very well-mannered towards vendors though, never disrupting business and only hounding you the moment food falls into your hands. One of them made it a mission to stalk my dad’s…

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter

February 15, 2018

Spending Christmas with a little bit of magic. The main reason for our visit attraction in USJ is most definitely the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. My inner child was screaming in delight and did you know that you can actually walk through the castle?! That would’ve been such a highlight but sadly the line was snaking and we couldn’t be bothered to wait. It felt like the perfect season to visit though – it was Christmas and winter in Japan…

Day Trip: Kobe

February 10, 2018

What We Did I thought it’d be nice to have kobe beef in Kobe itself so i decided to take my family there for our Christmas Eve lunch. We arrived Kobe 2hrs before our reservation but ended up getting sushi rolls and small appetizers from Sogo’s food hall since we had time to kill. Our lunch was at Sai Dining, a small underground restaurant that only sits 28people at a time. All dishes are served as a course meal of…
